hike to the lakes

We went for another hike on Saturday afternoon. The weather here in town was beautiful and warm. So Tyler didn't grab a jacket, Kaden was in shorts (which is typical, regardless of the weather), and both boys just had a vest on over their t-shirts.

You know, we were thinking that since it was so nice here, it would probably be a little cooler in the mountains. But we weren't expecting snow!

Tyler assessing the situation. The boys were so excited to be in the snow. All winter long Kaden has been asking to play in the snow. On several different occasions he has said, "I wish we could live in Idaho. Then we would have LOTS of snow!"

This first lake was only 20 yards from the trail head. There wasn't that much snow on the trail because of all the tree cover. And it wasn't actually that cold, just really WET. So we decided to hike to the next lake, 3/4 of a mile farther on.

We made it, but it sure seemed like it was more than 3/4 of a mile. We were a little surprised to see the lake still half frozen over. No one else was up there, so it was nice and quiet. (No one else was stupid/crazy enough to hike up there this time of year.)

Except us.

The boys were soaked clear through their shoes, but they didn't complain of being cold. Jaren and Clayton's hands were pretty cold. Jaren kept slipping in the wet snow and falling down.

Once we got back to the car, the boys didn't want to get in. They kept running around in the snow. We threw some snowballs, and then called it a day. We had plenty of extra blankets in the car to warm everyone up.

This was definitely an adventure we won't soon forget! And we are SO grateful we made it out and back home safely.

Because these people didn't.

As near as we can tell, they took the corner too fast and over-corrected, getting too close to the edge and then tipping right over. We don't know how long the car was there, but it wasn't there on our way up. Just scary.
