friday's gardenings

When buying, or receiving, or cutting your own flowers, there are a few things you can do to help them last longer.

-Don't place them in direct sunlight.

-Use luke-warm water. Plants absorb warm water easier than cold. Hot water will kill them.

-Re-cut the stems once you can put them in water. Try holding the stems underwater, and clip them 1/2 to 1 inch at an angle.

-Remove all the leaves that will be under the water. You only need a couple inches of water. Plants only absorb water through the ends of their stems.

-Use the flower food/preservative packets that come with the flowers. You can also buy larger containers of this at flower shops. If you don't have any, you can add a pinch of sugar(food), and a drop of vinegar(acid). Mix it well before adding the flowers.

-When cutting flowers, cut them in the morning. The sugar and water content is at its highest at this point.
